there's a tradition in Argentina that says you should eat gnocchi on the 29th of each month, and you have to put a dollar bill under your plate so that it brings you good fortune.
i'm still waiting to get rich, but i do love eating gnocchi every chance i get! since my mom's staying with me during her house hunt, she made some sweet potato gnocchi for my friends and i. they were SOOOO good!

i went to a dual birthday party today in the park. there's nothing like a park, a few beers, and some friends to spend a saturday afternoon!
our time at the park included some bocci ball. i was blue. (insert inappropriate joke here).
i discovered i really do suck at bocci ball, but i had a great time trying!

and my weekend of rest begins.... sorta. i took a trip downtown today that included a stroll through Seaport Village. there was a man there who rescues birds who are mistreated by their owners, and he nurses them back to health. they were beautiful!! these two colorful parrots were more than happy to strike a few poses for me :-)

my brother popped up in San Diego this weekend, so we got together for a little catch-up session and some food. we went to a sushi place downtown that i'd never been to, but we all really enjoyed it. this is what he got, which was one hell of a sushi sampler! i couldn't resist taking a picture of it since it looked so pretty :-)

i've lived in san diego for 7 years now, and tonight was my first time visiting Filippi's in little italy! after years of visiting their market and wondering why the restaurant in the back was always so crowded, i finally got to see it for myself. the pizza was great! the garlic bread was awesome, too. and the atmosphere was totally great and worth the wait. we went early because i'd seen the crowds gather outside this place regularly, and sure enough when we left there was a line out the door and then some!
these jugs were hanging from the ceiling all over the place, as well as hanging down a couple of walls. next time, i'll have to ask about getting one up there for me :-)

tonight i met with a small group of friends to watch the movie Revenge of the Nerds in the outdoor pool area of a local hotel. it ROCKED! i'd forgotten how great that movie was, and to watch it outside with a beer in my hand was pretty awesome. i'll definitely be back there for other movies!

i have a mini project going on for an upcoming show i'm participating in (www.projectethos.com). i need to gather several letters from different places to form a few words. trust me, in my mind it looks amazing!  so this is the first letter i snapped a picture of. i got it off a license plate.... unfortunately, i probably won't use it because it's a capital case letter, and i really would like lower case. not to worry, i've gathered quite a few other letters since this one :-)

i didn't sleep well. at all. so.... i was up at 6:30 this morning. trust me, that's not at all like me! but i took advantage of a quiet campground and beautifully chilly beach, and i went for a walk along the water early in the morning. among my sightings was a my old friend, lifeguard tower 16, and a lot of seaweed. since i've already shown tower 16 on here, i present to you.... the seaweed!

wee hours of the night, August 13, 2010 in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA.

tonight i went to the San Elijo campgrounds with some friends to spend the night enjoying the outdoors. despite getting a nasty stomach bug (or some level of food- poisoning??), i had a blast. i could spend hours by the campfire and be perfectly content.
one of the girls there had a fabulous hat, which happened to look extra fabulous by the fire...

there was supposedly a meteor shower tonight... since i seem to pass out pretty early these days, there was no way i was gonna make it till the middle of the night to watch it. i did, however, manage to go out around 11:30 and drive out to where there are less lights to see if i could get a sneak peek. this is my mom in the passenger seat, looking out through the moon roof, keeping an eye out for any shooting starts.
results: we saw no shooting stars. but we did give the local cop a scare when he saw a random car parked in the dark in an industrial park. :-)

i stopped at the La Jolla Open Aire Market today, and every time i go there i just drool over all the houses. it's not even about how big they are, because most of them aren't that big. the neighborhood just has such character that i start daydreaming about what life would be in one of those homes. this fence caught my attention.... maybe it made me wonder what was behind it......

when i helped my mom with her recent move, we came across a lot of family items that we'd forgotten about. among them was this handkerchief, which was actually in my nightstand for some reason! turns out it belonged to my great-grandmother, on my father's side of the family.
so after the move, my mom gave it to me to keep as a keepsake of that side of the family. it now has a permanent spot on my nightstand :-)
